The most likely funding source for the Auckland
Harbour Bridge walk/cycle way is from an existing fuel tax known as
"R" funding. It's
5c included in the price of every litre of fuel sold in the Auckland
region from 2005 to 2015.
This "R" funding is expected to generate a
total of $770 million, of which 7%
is to be allocated to regionally important Travel Demand Projects
(such as the Auckland Harbour Bridge walk/cycle way) - this equate to $54 million
ARTA has include the AHB walk/cycle way in its list
of potential projects to be funded with "R funding" see
this January
22, 2008, letter from ARTA's CEO to the ARC regarding funding, on
page 3 the Auckland Harbour Bridge walk/cycle way has been
ear-marked $60 million ("100% FAR" means 100% Financial Assistance Rate,
that is: no local council contribution is required).
So whilst the potential funding is in place, the cost of
the walk/cycle way needs to win general public and political support to
proceed.
