A short sign of life… near Onehunga

Detour 01With CAA very busy on a very big project coming up (hint: its related to the elections) posting has been a bit light.

But we thought it would be neat to show you this little section of infrastructure that has recently been built near Onehunga. It detours a bad section of the foreshore cycle route, where cyclists had to go through part of the SH20 Interchange if they wanted to stay legal and not go against traffic. Unsurprisingly, few cyclists did take this route. It made little sense, and was even less safe.

CAA has been pushing for an improvement to be implemented here for 2 years. In fact, every few months I was hassling the poor safety engineer tasked with planning it, who – having little funding and no serious crash history here (yet) – had to appease me every time.

Detour 02Okay, now it’s finally in. Great. But also a great example of why we need more cycling funding, so such simple improvements don’t have to wait forever.

On a more positive note, we’re hearing that AT are looking at improvements along Orpheus Drive itself, once the foreshore reclamation is done. Another section needing big improvement is of course at the Queenstown Rd roundabout and Hendry Hill, so there’s more work to come for CAA.
