Getting Waitakere [Hospital] on bikes

By , July 17, 2012

When people talk about “travel plans” for companies or organisations, too often the process never moves beyond a few well-intentioned brochures telling people why they should switch to bikes, walk to work or use car pooling / public transport. But people’s habits don’t change easily, and some good words normally ain’t enough.

So it’s great to see initiatives where interested “maybe” folks get active encouragement and assistance to try something new, and stick with it. Like riding to work by bike – in this case to Waitakere Hospital.

A great project made possible by Auckland Transport and realised by Recreation Solutions, together with NextBike, and T. Whites Bikes.

Congratulations to everyone for this initiative – I love the pace and ultimate joy getting these new people cycling. Don’t you wish all big organisations out west could take advantage of this travel planning support! After all , they have access to the best ever off- road cycleway. Our next job has to be making that mean Lincoln Rd less of a racetrack and more welcoming for cycling.
