Hi Mark,
I agree with you on most things and court decision was correct based on current rode code.
Looking at examples from other countries it seem that opening door into traffic is an offence. So maybe NZ road code needs to be revised.
Also found road code from California where it says that cyclists are allowed to pass on the left (right in USA)
I think that it would be interesting so see what would happen if car would hit the parked car open door. I believe that all insurance companies would say that it is the parked car doors fault! Why is it different for cyclists I really dont know. :-/

Cheers

Great post and maybe this will be the defining moment where govt / council finally have a requirement to change cycling infrastructure. We need to keep on them now and not let Ms Bishops death be in vain.

This is not the first time cyclists have been allowed to bike across the bridge legally. During a Birkenhead Transport Ltd strike in about 30 years ago, in response to public requests people were allowed legally to walk or cycle across on the western lane. The Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority changed its mind later in the day.

I don't live in the area but cycle through Te Atatu on a regular basis. A cycle path on Te Atatu Rd is a great idea as with the exception of early in the morning there is a lot of vehicle traffic being squeezed through what is a narrow road making it dangerous for cyclists. Unfortunately your average cyclist isn't suited to the footpath (where many motorists believe the belong) ...

Indeed, cycleways could be made alongside all the motorways, ensuring commuting along the centralised transportation route that Auckland is built around is an option on a bike.
