Explore the City Rides – Feb 2011

Looking to get out and enjoy our warm summer days?   February is Bikewise Month and the perfect time to be enjoying Auckland by bike. Come explore the city with CAA every Sunday in February. Check out the schedule below.  Rides meet at 10 for a 10.30 start.

SOUTH –  Onehunga’s three favourite cycleways

Date:  Sunday February 6
Time: 10:00am for a pre-ride briefing. The ride will depart at 10:30am.

Onehunga is a hub of three glorious cycleways and a perfect starting point for a ride any day or time of year.  This sunday ride is perfect for beginners, families, and those who love a gorgeous view.  Departing from the community centre on Church Street, you will head out over the new Mangere cycle bridge to Ambury farm, one of our favorite cycle routes.  Returning via the Manukau foreshores you can soak in the breathtaking harbour views.   If time permits the ride will loop a short way along the Mt Roskill cycleway, en route back to Onehunga’s Community Centre and Library Cafe.

WEST – Coastal Circuit, Hobsonville Point with Frocks on Bikes

Help kick off the Hobsonville Point Farmer’s Market and join us for a pedal around Hobsonville Point, the former RNZAF base.  Rich in history, the base was the centre of not only air force operations but leisure time for officers, enlisted men, and their families.  A perfect opportunity to put on your Sunday best, this is a cruisey little ride with lots of time for coffee and wandering the market.  Bring a basket and ride through time; passing the old runway where you can take in the beautiful views of the water.  The ride meanders back beside old air force buildings, and the park.

Journey Planner: If anyone is interested in carpooling please let us know. When coming from the North Western Motorway, turn right into Hobsonville Road and travel for 4-5kms. You will see a large sign for ‘Hobsonville Airfield’ and a turn-off to your right into Buckley Avenue. If coming from the North Shore, the Buckley Avenue exit is on your left, approximately 1km past the Greenhithe Bridge. Follow Buckley Avenue down to the playground and Catalina Cafe you will see on your right.

NORTH – Explore the Green Route

A primarily off road path, the Devonport to Takapuna Green Route, is a gem you’ll want to visit again.  On this 10 km ride, can be adapted to all levels.  Going along at a very relaxed pace,  you’ll have time to take in the fantastic city views from the tranquility of the bay shores.  Meandering up from Devonport we’ll pedal through Ngataringa Park, Bayswater, and across the mangroves to the recently updated path in Northboro Reserve.  Looping back along the grounds of Takapuna Grammar the group will return to Devonport via Narrow Neck and Cheltenham Beach.  Public Toilets are available at the Pier and Bayswater Park, and Cheltenham.

EAST– Waterfront ride along Tamaki Drive for a summer picnic

Date: Sunday February 27
Time: 10:00am for a pre-ride briefing. The ride will depart at 10:30am.
Where: Outside the Britomart Station, Queen’s Street

This flat leisurely ride, along the bays of Tamaki Drive boast some of Auckland’s most stunning views and provides riders with exposure to easy city cycling.  We’ll take the off road cycle lane to Mission Bay, with an optional spin down to St Heliers.  Feel free to pack a lunch or enjoy the local café fare.  Departing from the front of Britomart this is the perfect opportunity to experience the ease and mobility provided by integrated rail and cycle networks.

Rides will be led by volunteers from Cycle Action Auckland.   A pre-ride briefing will be held on road and bike safety.  All participants are responsible for their own safety and ride at their own risk.
