Cycle changes coming to the Domain

Barbara On Her Folding Bike 249x300 Cycle changes coming to the DomainA few things are afoot (or is that a-pedal?) in the Auckland Domain – Council and Auckland Transport are changing a couple things so traffic will work better for peds and cyclists in Auckland’s oldest park.

Cycle Action had some early opportunity to feed into those ideas, and Barbara Insull, our secretary, even made it into the news about it. 30 kph speed limit, more traffic calming features, and an uphill cycle lane on Lower Domain Drive? Sounds like a good start to us.

Excellent excellent stuff. I’m amazed at the quick action by Auckland Transport after years of us complaining to the Council about domain drive and lower domain drive. Lets hope they find a way of widening Domain Drive between lower domain drive and Parnell Rd.

Can’t widen unfortunately. The Domain, properly, is tightly ‘controlled’ after decades of, oh, just bit here and a bit there won’t make a difference. Yeah right!

The original intention of the Domain was a place of quiet enjoyment and that road was originally designed to facilitate that. Unfortunately, that was before the good burghers of the east discovered their personal highway to the city.

Mind you, I shouldn’t complain; my grandmother used to drive her grandfather to his work in Commerce St through the Domain on a very regular basis during her late teens, early 20s – in about late 1930s. Some things never change I guess.
