Image 01 300x142 Cycling. Visualised. The Australian Cycling Promotion Fund has restaged a 20 year old, very striking image.

The photos from Muenster, Germany (and now Canberra, Australia) show in very intuitive terms how much SPACE the dominance of car travel takes over in our city.

69 people in cars, 69 people on the bus, 69 people on bikes. It was never easier to visualise.

I always wanted to stage this as a stunt in NZ. But it never made sense to do it just on it’s own – would need to be part of a coherent campaign. Possibly around parking reform? Or maybe just around transport funding?

The car still comes out looking better than it should.
What about all the parking (& duplicate parking) required for workplaces, big box stores, etc, etc?
Apparently the space required for cars should at least be quadrupled, by this account: http://www.treehugger.com/cars/parking-spaces-outnumber-cars-3-to-1-cause-environmental-problems.html
