Mountain biking facilities in the Auckland region
While not normally a key matter to us, Cycle Action was recently asked to contribute to a plan whereby mountain bike clubs would work with Auckland Council to open up some of our regional parks for mountain biking. We think it’s a great idea, bringing together those who have land suited to recreational use with those who are keen to develop new trails.
Not only is mountain biking a fun, aerobic sport suited to the whole family, it develops both risk management and technical skills in youngsters which translate to sound road skills, whether for commuting, recreational riding, or racing. We’re concerned many children are being deterred from physical activity in general – and deterred from cycling around their local neighbourhoods and between home and school due to the lack of cycle paths and generally cycle-unfriendly roading environment. Therefore, we endorse any initiative, which gets both kids and adults onto two wheels in relatively safe and controlled off-road areas.
So from the Hunuas in the south, through centrally located Hamlins Hill to Atiu Creek in the north, look out for more recreational off-road and mountain biking facilities as the trails are established. And thanks Auckland Council for seizing the initiative and setting the processes in motion to make it happen.
