Regional Roundup – Waiheke Island (Cycle Action Waiheke, CAW)

The National Cycle Trail Expansion Network- Waiheke Bid

Jonathan Kennett from the National cycleway advisory panel has boosted Waiheke’s chances of inclusion in this project. Jonathan visited the island on his bike recently and was impressed with the combination of quiet rural roads and stunning coastal views. He highlighted the waterfront Esplanade as a jewel in the islands bid. Two other locations were noted as requiring cycle safety improvements. These are locations that CAW have advocated for change for many years.

Auckland Transport have already signaled a commitment to improve the lower section of Ocean View Rd by removing some of the roadside parking. This will create much needed space for a cycle lane to the ferry terminal – we are all watching this space with interest.

Waiheke Local Board (WLB) Annual Plan / Esplanade

CAW made a submission to the WLB in particular questioning comments that seemed to advocate for “sealing the Esplanade” for better motorist access. CAW’s submission and many other similar ones from individual residents were acted on by the WLB who following the plans formal hearing, removed the comments from the annual plan.

It is wonderful to see the WLB reacting so positively to people’s wishes on this issue. The annual plan process has highlighted the importance of the need for careful consideration of the costs and benefits of keeping this coastal cycle / walkway free of motorized traffic.

New cycle lane on Alison Road

Auckland Transports proactive and speedy creation of a new painted cycle lane on one of Waiheke’s most uncomfortable hills has been widely applauded by CAW. The CAW committee flagged up the opportunity during ongoing seal repairs. The cycle lane was created at almost no cost by clever re-allocation of the road space, during the line-painting phase of the works.

School Travel Planning and cycle training

The loss of funding for the islands previously free school buses has focused attention on how limited transport options are for parents. Strong support from Auckland Transport in allowing the islands three schools to join their “Travelwise” programme has been applauded by CAW. Travelwise funding can improve road safety and comfort for walking and cycling options over the car drop off. It also provides targeted funding for cycle training for children.
