Rides for a Sunday in Spring

By , October 4, 2012

Rides for a Sunday in SpringWhether an organized ride with friends or a lazy pedal for brunch, Sunday rides in spring are my favorite.  Don't be deterred by the weather (it's Auckland - wait 30 minutes and it will change).  Stow a jacket in your basket and head out this weekend.  If you are looking for fun on two wheels there are a couple of things to check out Sunday 7 October:

Wynyard Quarter Family Bike Day (11am-2pm): “Get ready for summer biking. Bring your bikes to the Wynyard Quarter for a maintenance check, have-a-go on the Bigfoot Confidence course, bike decoration, face painting & more. Enter the draw to win bike shop vouchers.”

Greenwoods Corner to Cornwall Park Heritage Ride (departs 11am ASB Greenwoods Corner): a sedate Sunday morning cycle ride  from Greenwoods Corner through Sir John Logan Campbell's Cornwall Park.  Make that jacket a tweed one and pack a picnic hamper.

Tweed Run Image 300x272 The Tweed RunGuest post from Frocks on Bikes

Tweed is so the thing for all our frockfabuloso peeps out there. It is sweeping the globe as the ‘must do’ cyclecentric event and is soooo ‘now’. What’s more, the Auckland tweed run starts with brunch … how can you resist?

The Auckland Tweed Run – also celebrating 3 years of 40 km/h on Ponsonby Road – will be happening:

  • When: at 11 am Sunday 16th September,
  • Where: starting with brunch at T Whites Everyday Bikes (The 2nd Hand Bike Shop) with free scones, champagne etc

The ride will then take a leisurely route through the Grey Lynn / Ponsonby area with a stop for a trim cappi frappy latte coffee … in Ponsonby, of course!

Waikato River Trails Large 455x1024 Cycling the Mighty WaikatoBy Barbara Cuthbert, CAA Chair

Do you have the feeling that most of our National Cycle Trails are in stunning, but isolated rural settings, well away from Auckland? Not so – the good news is that routes are opening closer to us, and are in easy reach for a weekend away.

In the past month I have ridden most of the new Waikato River Trail and the Forgotten World Highway with friends, and we are totally hooked. I hear the Hauraki Rail Trail is in the pipeline and worth waiting for.

I was lucky to have local advice for our Waikato River ride, as parts of it that are pretty raw, and currently suitable only for skilled mountain bikers. Mark Taylor from Mt Eden Cycles also gave us tips, so we had lots to go on.

We left Auckland at lunchtime on Friday and drove to ‘Out in the Styx’ where owner Lance took us and our bikes to start riding at Whakamaru, in the warm late afternoon sun. The path followed the river, with peaceful long views through trees over cool green water and across to white river cliffs on the opposite bank.

We were inspired by the beauty of the river, and quickly adjusted our Aucklander’s view of the river from its slow brown expanse at Meremere.  Our afternoon ended with a delightful riverside boardwalk ride past the Mangakino golf course to join locals in a beer and ‘burger at a quaint lakeside caravan café.

Waiheke Valentine night bike ride

By , February 14, 2012

To celebrate New Zealand Bikewise month, story teller Tanya Batt is  inviting ‘lovers of two wheels’ to join her for a Valentine Night Cycle on Tuesday 14th February. Meeting at the Story Centre at 8.45pm and heading off on a mystery cycle that will culminate in a romantic supper. This event is suited for those people whose bed time is after 8.45pm, who are confidant road cyclists and can cycle at reasonable speed for several kilometres.

If you are keen here’s what you need to know:

Meet at the Story Centre, Artworks Oneroa, Waiheke at 8.45pm Tuesday 14th February.

Light up your bike – yes xmas lights, head torches, lamps – you do need to be seen.

Dress up – remember cycling is no excuse for lycra but an excellent opportunity to kit up in latex, tutus, tuxedos, ball gowns or to
decorate your helmet.

Bring something suitable for a shared supper and aa koha.

Any questions you can email Tanya Batt at tanya@imagined-worlds.net
