Recap from the Cycle Carnival

A small recap from the Cycle Carnival last Sunday from our committee member Jena:

I just wanted to give a big shout out to the whole AT team & the amazing Debbie Lang for the Cycle Carnival today.

The wharf was abuzz and I think it is an event that is only going to grow. We were delighted to see each and every bike park around Queen’s Wharf was being used today!

I had a fantastic time highlighting family cycling with AT North’s School Program and Cycle West. Other AT staff were in the green screen photo booth working a little VFX/BMX magic and making even bike helmet fittings cool!

Also big props for one of our local helpers and her son who scooted around to make sure all the volunteers were sunscreened and hydrated. Tumeke, Auckland Bike Polo, Bigfoot, the Refuge Program all came out. The day ran seamlessly and shone a heap of sunlight down on all the great things happening for cycling in Auckland.

Top 10 Ways to Greater Cyle Safety

By , March 31, 2012

Cycling in Auckland is safer than many people think. But for a novice it can certainly still be a bit intimidating at times. So what can we suggest to make the ride safer? In no absolutely exhaustive or authorative order, we offer these suggestions for your cyclistic consideration:

  • Can You Spot Bike Ninja 300x225 Top 10 Ways to Greater Cyle Safety10 – Be visible: As winter comes, you shouldn’t be Bike Ninja – “the one who shall not be seen (until it is too late)“. If high-viz vests aren’t your style, buy a stylish white or light gray jacket. Or light up your bike with some fluro striping and reflectors, instead of wearing special clothes – that way, the high-viz will always be along when you go on a ride. And of course, a flashing red light should be part of your kit too – at least during winter times.
  • 09 – Be sober: If even the idea of “riding under the influence” offends you, congratulate yourself: You have just greatly lowered your safety risk. A significant minority of cycle fatalities involve the cyclist being drunk (of course the much greater risk is usually caused by drunk motorists – but hey, we are talking about what you can do to lower your risk).
  • 08 – Use maps: Especially if you are just starting out on your future regular route, or going somewhere you haven’t been before. The maps from Auckland Transport have been developed together with Cycle Action, and give you some good hints where the safer routes are in your area. The maps are progressively being overhauled at the moment – after updating the Central Area map, CAA is currently working for AT on several more of them.

Tumeke first day Jan 11 300x225 Community DIY bike workshop needs volunteersAuckland’s fledgling community DIY bike workshop is in need of some volunteers so we can continue to support and promote Auckland’s bicycle culture.

If you’ve visited us at events, come into the workshop or just heard about what we’re working to create, why not come and be a part of it? No prior knowledge of bikes is required, just some healthy enthusiasm!

Tumeke opening Jan 11 225x300 Community DIY bike workshop needs volunteersOn Sunday 27th of March Tumeke Cycle Space is holding an orientation for new volunteers (or undecided ones) from 10:00am until 11:00am. Come along to this and be brought up to speed with Tumeke Cycle Space: the story so far. You can learn more about what we’re trying to achieve and how we’re doing that as well as finding out what the deal is with our workshop space and the sharing arrangement we have with Tangleball. We’ll also talk about how we fundraise, some of the varied ways you could be involved as a volunteer AND we’ll treat you to some of our renowned bicycle blended vegan bannana berry smoothies.

Sound good? Well, you can then stay for the monthly specific skill
workshop – this month will be focusing on derailleurs, and after that from 12:00 the workshop will be functioning in its regular capacity.

Regular weekly DIY bike workshops start up in Auckland

By , January 12, 2011

Tumeke 300x200 Regular weekly DIY bike workshops start up in AucklandTumeke Cycle Space welcome you to the launch of their weekly bike maintainence workshops in their new, permanent, central location!

Recently Tumeke have teamed up with the newly formed Tangleball (a place for creative people to collaborate on building their ideas with the aim to nurture both technical and artistic ideas). This is set to be an exciting partnership and will mean that we can now offer a permanent, central city space for the bike workshops and other projects to happen.

To kick start the new year and get the space rocking we will be opening for weekly DIY bike workshops from THIS SUNDAY the 16th of Janurary, and all Sundays there after (more opening hours will hopefully be added).

Time: 11am till 3pm (note: the wider Tangleball space is open to the public from 3pm till 5pm, so fine to stay later and check that out also.)

Place: 27 Edinburgh Street, on the corner with Ophir Street, just down from K Road, see the map here.

What: Some folks from Tumeke will be at the space to help you access and use the tools, bike stand, pump etc and can also help supply some basic gear (cables, puncture repair kits and limited spare parts) for a small donation. The idea is to come along with your bike, use the equipment and get support from others who are passionate about bikes. A koha for the use of tools and the space would be appreciated.

Also starting up this year are monthly skill sharing workshops on a specific maintenance skill. These will be on the last Sunday of the months time slot. The first one will be on January 30th and will cover puncture repair skills. It will be kid friendly and open to all ranges of experience. The focus again is on participation, there will be wheels and puncture repair equipment to use or bring your own. These will also be for a koha. Stay tuned for the new skill/topic each month and if you wish to host one please get in touch!

For any questions, if you are keen to get more involved with the collective or have bikes, parts or tools to donate please email us at tumekecyclespace@gmail.com.

Visit http://www.tumekecyclespace.org.nz for more info, and you can also search for us on facebook and join the group for updates and events.

Cheers and happy cycling
