Tiverton-Wolverton Alternative Cycle Route – your feedback needed

Auckland Transport is planning some improvements for cyclists and pedestrians at two key intersections in New Windsor. Both are on Mulgan St, which forms an alternative cycle route to the recently upgraded Tiverton/Wolverton arterial. Check out the details and maps below (thanks, AT) and give your feedback online any time until Monday 25 May 2015.

What are the proposed changes?

1. Improvements to the Mulgan Street/Margate Road/Whitney Street intersection

  • Footpath widening and reconstruction of pedestrian refuge islands on Whitney Street to improve pedestrian and cycle crossing points.
  • The creation of four small sections of off-road shared walking and cycling path, including cycle ramps to and from the road.
  • Tactile paving at pedestrian refuges.
  • The kerb by the three car parks on Whitney Street is to be relocated eastward by 0.3m.  This is to ensure vehicles using the car parks are further away from the traffic lane and do not obscure pedestrian visibility of vehicles approaching the intersection and pedestrian crossing.

2. Improvements to the Mulgan Street/Mary Dreaver Street intersection (see Map 2)

  • Relocation of the ‘stop lines’ closer to traffic lanes on Mary Dreaver Street to reduce the crossing distance for cyclists.
  • Broken yellow lines (to indicate ‘no parking’) in two locations to improve the visibility of on-coming vehicles and to prevent parked cars blocking the traffic lane.
  • The installation of an island on the north-eastern arm of Mulgan Street to prevent vehicles cutting the corner (i.e. vehicles turning right from Mary Dreaver Street into Mulgan Street), reduce vehicle speeds, and encourage compliance with the stop sign restrictions (currently many vehicles are treating the intersection as a ‘give-way’ control).

Why are the changes required?

The improvements are required to improve the safety and appeal of the Tiverton-Wolverton Alternative Cycle Route, which provides a safe route for cyclists between Wolverton Street and Maioro Street (via Miranda Street, Blockhouse Bay Road, Margate Road, Mulgan Street and New Windsor Road).

The proposal also includes improvements to pedestrian facilities.

When will the proposed changes be implemented?

Subject to the feedback received, physical works are planned to commence in July 2015.
